Asian Hair Style Tips
Short, long, sassy, conservative, check out the largest online collection of Asian hair styles!
- Don't go to a hairdresser who's under 30 years of age (unless they are Asian). Because Asian hair defies all rules of hairdressing, you'll need a hairdresser whose scissors have more than just a few dye stains. I had a 21 year old hairdresser tell me that in all his years of experience (what - two?) he's never given an Asian a perm and that good Asians should go straight (please!).
- Until recently, I did not know that a "real spiral perm" requires special spiral rods that look like long chopsticks. Most hairdressers cheat and simply use the smallest perming rods available. Wrong. Because Asian hair takes a long time to "take" to a normal perm", you're wasting your money getting a spiral perm unless your hairdresser has these special rods. By the way, Asians with spiral perms who have a fair amount fold above the eye lid will often be mistaken for Latino. This was quite evident when everyone in Spain spoke to me in their mother tongue. Que?
- I like to use a hairdresser who's trained at a reputable school such as Vidal Sassoon, as opposed to some no-name beauty school who hands out certificates for $100 bucks. Get a recommendation from an Asian person you know who has a great hairstyle/hair colour.
- If you sport the typical short bangs and long hair (the typical Asian look) and never colour or perm your hair, then you won't need a hairdresser whose Asian certified. So you can go along your merry way to one of those $6/cut franchises. After all, it doesn't take a genius to cut a straight line. According to my mother, all it took was a big soup bowl placed on the top of my head.
