The History of the Wig
The history of the hair wig is a long and storied one. While the word we know today as "wig" is derived from the French word "periwig," the seeds of wig-wearing were planted in the fourth century BC by the Egyptians, who shaved their heads to more comfortably work under grueling conditions. As a result, hairpieces were worn "off hours" as marks of status and rank within Egyptian culture.

Fast forward nearly two millennia to medieval France, where the periwig was adopted to cover up premature baldness. It wasn't until roughly a century later that Louis VIII took fast to the periwig as an adornment, thus popularizing the cosmetic use of wigs. Today, that purely aesthetic factor drives many wig-wearers, but still more are motivated by the stigma of hair loss, which drives the majority of wig sales.

The Hair Wig Today
The modern hair wig can be made of natural or synthetic fibers. Acrylic wigs offer the advantage of ease; they make for simple covers and are easy to maintain. They can, however, be hot and itchy, especially in the summertime. Ready-made human-hair wigs boast a natural appearance and several different foundation options but can also be a bit warm. Moreover, they are harder to care for and do require some styling, which is both an advantage and a disadvantage depending on how you view it.

Custom-made human-hair wigs are the most comfortable and natural of the lot. They are typically cooler (as in temperature) and are tailor-made to your head, so their look is unbeatable. But it can sometimes take several weeks to have one made and delivered, so if you need a convincing wig on the double, this may not be the best choice. Also, custom-made wigs are the most expensive of the bunch, as they are individually designed for their wearers.
